Grou.ps Pulls In $1.1 Million, Opens Up Code To Take On Ning

. Monday, June 30, 2008

Grou.ps, a startup based in San Francisco, has secured a $1.1 Million Series A financing round in a deal led by Golden Horn Ventures. Grou.ps will also now be open-sourcing a restricted version of its code, with a view to spreading its collaboration tools. This move is based around the idea of commoditizing the platform faster and then taking advantage of the fact that they can then hire the best programmers out there. Currently Grou.ps has about 200,000 active users worldwide, after launching a public beta in April.

The site offers chat, blogs, wikis, forums, mailing lists, photo albums, bookmarking, calendaring and maps among other features. You can run all of your group’s collaboration tools from one Grou.ps domain using a single login. It also will mash with content from Flickr and YouTube. In fact if it sounds a little like Ning or Wetpaint, then that’s because it has several aspects in common with those sites. One of the main differences are that Ning - with $104 Million in backing - has a much larger number of users and also runs ads, whereas Grou.ps doesn’t (apart from the AdSense code group owners can add).

Choose the right Social Networking application.

If you are looking to establish your own community e.g social networking, here's a review completed by the geeks in TechCrunch. I agree with their finding about Ning. I actually use Ning in some of our project such as RandomPage.com (formerly known as Plogging.com) and DNConference.com Domain Name for Business.

---
The news may overflow with stories about the social networking giants, such as Facebook and MySpace, but a horde of companies are doing their best to reduce the fundamental features of these websites to mere commodities. These up-and-coming companies provide so-called “white label” social networking platforms that enable their customers to build their own social networks (often from scratch) and to tailor those networks to a range of purposes.

The idea of white labeling a network is to make the platform provider as invisible as possible to the social network’s users and to brand the network with the builder’s identity or intent. While definitions of “social networking” may vary, social networks are primarily defined by member profiles and some sort of user generated content.

There are roughly three types of companies that have emerged in the space of white label social networking. The first provides hosted, do-it-yourself solutions with which customers can largely point and click their way to a brand new social network. Companies of this type interact minimally with their customers and rather focus on providing the network-building tools that they demand.

We have taken a sample of nine of these companies - Ning, KickApps, CrowdVine, GoingOn, CollectiveX, Me.com, PeopleAggregator, Haystack, and ONEsite - all of which provide free baseline services, and reviewed them individually below. We have also included the chart on the right summarizing all of these companies’ offerings. Credit for initial research into these companies goes to Jeremiah Owyang who compiled a comprehensive list of white label social networking services.

Knowing your visitors

I've been using Google web analytic for years but not paying attention to it. Well, after reading this article Web Analytics Demystified by Avinash Kaushik (thanks to Steve M of SimplyGeo.com for the link) it gave me ways to understand my visitors and concentrate on their specific needs. I suggest that you read the article too if you want to improve your website contents and increase revenue.

The Google Web Analytics is free to use, so go there and register for your website. You can assign analytic code to each of your websites so you can track each visits, page views, bounce rate, etc.

Enough said, I already provided some reading links for you. Check them and don't be lazy (^_^).

Developing a website for business!

Developing a website is a challenge for everyone, some don't have knowledge to start, some don't have the money, some don't have the time, etc. Which one are you?

I personally having a time management issue to start a project. I believe 24 hours is not enough for me. I'm asking God to make it 48 hours. Just kidding.

Seriously, I plan to develop a domain to a full website at least 1 web project a week. So far, I'm behind 1-2 weeks for every project. The last project is www.Chicago-City.com and www.FairfaxCity.com, the design and content is 80-90% complete. I need to bring up the advertising space so the visitors will know that we are accepting ad space. I have the graphics for ad space ready, so integrating the auto paypal payment is next. I hope to can complete this task in a week.

I'm also building my development team but very slow in process. So I guess I will be another months of managing my time in a more productive way. Hey what about my Marketing Team, I guess this is next!

Investing in .TV domain name (Part2/2)

. Sunday, January 20, 2008

This is the 2nd part of Investing in .TV Domain Name article. If you haven't read the 1st part yet, I highly recommend that you read it first so you can see the potential value of .TV domain extension.

I will introduce some tools that you can use for your .TV domain names if you don't have the time to develop it. The solution I will discuss here is just another way to maximize the revenue of your .TV portfolio.

Use a FREE service to make money for your .TV portfolio.

Tool #1 Magnify.net. The service is FREE and easy to customize. We have some GEO .TV domain names that are using Magnify.net to share, upload and watch video/photos. For some live .TV websites, see examples below:

  • http://www.belgium.tv/ - this automatically search the internet using the keyword(s) that I've assigned during setup. You can schedule the search every 3 days or 5 days or 7 days.
  • http://www.jersey.tv/ - similar approach with Belgium.TV but this search more cities in New Jersey and New York. So the content is huge.
  • http://www.fairfax.tv/ - is basically concentrated in Fairfax, Virginia to support our local community to upload and watch local video found in many video hosting services.

Not only for GEO .TV domain names, here are some examples that I used Magnify.net service:

To get your own Video Social Networking tool, go check it out http://www.magnify.net/.

Tool #2 http://www.mogulus.com/. This is my favorite tool for my .TV domain. I currently use this for http://www.station.tv/ to broadcast my own live music.

Did I mention that these services are free to use? If I havent, yes they are free to use.

Tool #3 http://www.justin.tv/. Yes this is broadcasting service now, check out the how to broadcasting guide to start your own.

Tool #4 Mobile Video services such as kyte.tv, qik.com and flixwagon.com

Tool #5 WorldTV.com provide free online video tool. For example, visit http://www.worldtv.com/usa to watch video online.

Tool #6 TravelGuide.TV provide free video that you can embed to your existing website. The video is done by professional videographer and the voice over is so sexy. Thanks to shocko at namepros for introducing this service. See this in action, visit www.FairfaxCity.com website or www.Cityware.com Travel Resource.

HOW YOU CAN MAKE MONEY USING THESE TOOLS?

I can use my adsense code to show ads relevant to my video website. For Magnify.net, this is a shared profit ads though you can use other markerting approach to maximize your revenue. For example in http://www.michigan.tv/ website, I've used adsense and linkshare affiliate to provide ads around the video. I can also accept direct ad space from local customers, we can put this to the header, footer, side and middle area of the website.

Using Mogulus tool is very enjoying, easy to deploy and it's a complete studio solution. I can mix music video (as shown in http://www.station.tv/) of my own, using Youtube search results or allow other producer to broadcast with our http://www.station.tv/ broadcast. Sounds good ha! Well, take a peek at http://www.station.tv/ and enjoy our music. If you would like to hear other music, just drop as a note.

Added to adsense, I can use the ticker ad to show advertisement accepting monthly recurring payment to show their website to my avid listener. This is through Internet no boundaries, wide audiences.

Well, that's for now. I hope this help you follow your dream in media, entertainment or other related broadcasting business.

This trend will help you find out the most active .TLD domain name extension and history. http://www.google.com/trends?q=.tv%2C.biz%2C.name%2C.cc%2C.mobi

Best regards,
Emil @KING.NET
